R-290 is a refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential of 3, which is very low compared to HFC refrigerants such as R448A with a GWP of 1300. According to the EPA, refrigerants with a GWP higher than 150 contribute to climate change.
Energy Efficient
R-290 possesses superior thermodynamic properties, making it more energy-efficient than HFC refrigerants. On average, most open display cases result in up to 40% reduction in energy usage, saving approximately $300 per year per display case in operating costs.
Carbon Footprint
Hydrocarbon refrigerants, such as R-290 with a 0 Ozone depletion potential, are considered the cleanest and most environmentally friendly option for self-contained refrigerated display cases compared to HFC refrigerants. Overall, there is a 99.97% net carbon impact reduction with R290.
Be Ready for the AIM Act
We all have a responsibility as food retailers, manufacturers, and as individuals to do our part to “be kind” to the environment.
The EPA, under the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act, is phasing out Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in self-contained applications. These types of refrigerants such as R448A with a GWP of 1300 contribute to climate change.
On January 1st, 2025, manufacturers are prohibited from manufacturing refrigerated self-contained display cases with a GWP higher than 150. However, the EPA is allowing existing display cases to be serviced and repaired throughout the self-contained case's life cycle.
