Delivering Sustainability for Food Retailers, Earth Day and Every Day

Shoppers want to buy from companies that reflect their values—and today, that means companies that embrace sustainability.
As more people prioritize eco-friendly living, Hillphoenix is proud to provide retailers with the tools they need for sustainable refrigeration. On Earth Day, and every day, Hillphoenix is defining the future of refrigeration equipment by manufacturing modern, earth-friendly refrigeration systems and display cases.
Our commitment to sustainability is backed by our actions. On this Earth Day, we reflect on our history of Earth-friendly innovations and the bright future ahead. Here are some of the ways our business supports a healthy planet.
Building Industry Partnerships to Move Natural Refrigeration Forward
Moving an industry towards more sustainable technology requires a team effort.
That’s why we became founding members of organizations such as the North American Sustainable Refrigeration Council (NASRC) and the U.S. EPA’s GreenChill Program. We also partner with critical organizations such as Food Marketing Institute (FMI) Energy, ATMO America, North American Association of Food Equipment Manufacturers (NAFEM), International Institute of All-Natural Refrigeration (IIAR), Refrigerating Engineers & Technicians Association (RETA) and many others.
“We are committed to furthering natural refrigerants and cases, not only for the good of the industry but also for the good of the world,” said Dover Food Retail President Paul Sindoni.
Teaming up with other key refrigeration players for the good of the environment helps protect future generations. It builds the momentum the industry needs to embrace natural refrigerants and develop new innovations.
Helping Food Retailers Become More ‘Green’
We have earned the EPA’s GreenChill Store Certification Excellence recognition 13 years in a row. This recognition is awarded to the commercial refrigeration systems manufacturer that installs the most advanced refrigeration systems in GreenChill-Certified Stores in a year.
“It is an honor to be recognized year after year for making an impact for our customers, who share our commitment to environmentally friendly operations,” said Scott Martin, Director of Business Development and Industry Relations for Hillphoenix.
Being an Experienced Partner for Dependable, Scalable and Sustainable Solutions
Sustainability isn’t a new trend for Hillphoenix.
We’ve been involved with natural refrigerants for more than 25 years and there’s no substitute for experience. We developed the know-how from more than 21,000+ installations of CO2 systems and we happily share our expertise through training programs. We also rely on this experience to make it easy for food retailers to transition to natural refrigerants, including offering self-contained display cases that use R-290 (propane) for a simple, low-GWP solution. We have installed 14,000+ R-290 self-contained display cases and counting.
This foresight has helped position Hillphoenix as the leader in sustainable refrigerant solutions, with an unparalleled breadth of products and platform portfolio.
“Bringing CO2 transcritical technology to the U.S. when there wasn’t a push for it allowed us to get the experience with an installed base to develop a value chain for scalable solutions,” Eduardo Navarro, Vice President of Product Segments at Hillphoenix, said to ATMO. “Today, our pre-engineered platform of products unlocks a tremendous amount of efficiency in scale and installation/commissioning speed.”
Innovating What’s Next in Sustainability
The mission of making the food retail industry more sustainable is too important to rest on our laurels. That’s why we continuously innovate to expand our capabilities and create sustainable systems and cases that are even more approachable for food retailers.
For example, ChargeSecure minimizes downtime and offers peace of mind during power outages and service events by maintaining charge on our customers’ Hillphoenix CO2 system.
We also partnered with HVAC OEM Flō Energy Solutions on a CO2 heat reclaim project that retrofitted a small-format supermarket in Pennsylvania. The results were overwhelming. The optimized technology cut the natural gas used for winter comfort heating by 84%.
“This is an exciting time for retailers,” continued Martin. “We can heat a store with its CO2 refrigeration system to enhance the payback of that system.”
Helping Retailers Take the Next Step
Hillphoenix is a global leader in natural refrigeration, pushing the limits of what’s possible with sustainable whole-store solutions. That includes natural refrigerant systems that use CO2 and R-290, reliable display cases that facilitate modern merchandising and a team of experts who support retailers from planning through implementation and beyond.
We are proud to provide our customers with the tools they need to create a more sustainable food retail operation, which is good for the Earth and for their bottom line.
